Brit's record-breaking charity gift

4 July 2007

Pot of goldA city financier has broken the British record for charity gifts after he donated £230m to a charity foundation last year.

The Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) was the recipient of Christopher Hohn's donation, which is believed to be the most donated by any British person within a single year.

CIFF is a charitable foundation, which branches off from the moneyman's multibillion-pound hedge fund, TCI, which he set up in 2002.

Mr Hohn's money will go towards helping children in the developing world in the form of emergency humanitarian aid and projects to help eradicate HIV and AIDS through grants to Medecins Sans Frontieres and in collaboration with the Elton John Aids Foundation.

Other initiatives carried out by what is now one of Britain's largest charities include providing money and food to 800 families in the Homa Bay region of Kenya, which is one of the country's poorest areas.

While the record-breaking amount is impressive in itself, Mr Hohn also donated £50m to CIFF in the previous year. The increase in the amount of his donation is the result of the success of his hedge fund.
