Olympics legacy 'should be social enterprise'
2 April 2008
An
entrepreneur is seeking support for a social enterprise park to be
established as part of the Olympic legacy.
Third Sector reports that Sion Whellens, client services
director for printing design co-operative Calverts, wants to
encourage the creation of a "square mile" for social
enterprises.
In that way, such businesses could be based near to each other,
making co-operation between agencies more easy, Ms Williams
said.
"The park could be structured as a community land trust so that
the increase in land values could be of real benefit to the
enterprise community based there," she suggested.
Social Enterprise London's chief executive Allison Ogden-Newton
said that leisure centres, schools, a medical centre and housing
association could all be based in the area, reports the site.
Unlike commercial businesses, social enterprises'' objectives
are based around their social or environmental purpose.
The Social Enterprise Association describes it as "the business
model for the 21st century".
