Baby charity warns of bottle danger
7 May 2008
A
chemical used in the manufacture of some baby bottles may cause
changes in behaviour and the early onset of puberty, a charity has
said.
The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) has warned that
American research has shown that Bisphenol A could harm babies.
Chief Executive of the NCT Belinda Phipps said that parents
needed to be made aware of the dangers and that it should be made
clearer which bottles contain the chemical.
"So before we do anything else, we need clear labelling, parents
need to know of the risk and know how to avoid it," she told the
BBC''s Breakfast programme.
In America, a number of stores have already stopped selling
bottles containing Bisphenol A - which is used to stop plastic
products from shattering.
Parents are being advised not to pour boiling water into the
bottles as this can mean more of the chemical leaking out of the
plastic.
The NCT is a children's charity which supports parents through
pregnancy and early childhood.
