26 June 2008

Brain scanThe Wellcome Trust is financing the UK's first neuroethics centre, to be based at Oxford University.

More than £800,000 has been granted by the charity to Professor Julian Savulescu, from the philosophy and practical ethics departments.

He described the studies of the mind one of the "most profound aspects of human existence".

Professor Savuleacu commented: "In the last decade, advances in imaging and manipulating the brain have raised ethical challenges, particularly about the moral limits of the use of such technology, leading to the new discipline of neuroethics."

Researchers from different fields will be based at the centre, enabling a wide varierty of views on neurosciences to be represented.

Areas that will be studied include borderline consciousness, severe brain damage, free will, addiction, the enhancement of cognition and moral decision-making, among others.

The Wellcome Trust has also granted around another £800,000 to King's College London to support new research fellowships and studentships.

It works both within the UK and internationally to promote research into the wellbeing of humans and animals.
