British Red Cross 'ready to tackle swine flu outbreak'
5 May 2009
The British Red Cross is ready to
tackle a potential wide-spread outbreak of swine flu, it has
stated.
Margaret Lally, interim director of the charity's UK operations,
commented that it is already collaborating with health and social
care providers to support ambulance workers and offer home
visits.
Ms Lally said: "We have already developed plans to adapt and
extend our services to support the public if there is an
outbreak.
"Several of our managers across the country have been invited to
meet with local resilience forums over the next few days to review
the situation."
A Department of Health statement yesterday on 4 May reveal that
there are now 27 confirmed cases of swine flu in the UK, 23 in
England and 4 in Scotland.
It reassured the public, however, that the arrangements in place
"are continuing to ensure that we are well-placed to deal with this
new infection".
Meanwhile, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red
Crescent Societies has launched an appeal to raise 3.3 million
Euros (£2.9 million) to support an aid response to the disease.
