Monsoon batters Nepal
9 October 2009
A monsoon has
killed 45 people in Nepal as it continues to batter the region, it
has been reported.
The heavy rain and strong winds have caused severe flooding in
parts of the country, while landslides have also claimed several
lives.
Thousands of people have so far been displaced by the monsoon,
with flooding washing away homes in the region.
The current monsoon is expected to last until the weekend, while
50 people have died overall so far in this year's monsoon season,
according to the BBC.
Aid efforts are being coordinated by the Nepalese army, while
the country's government has also launched a relief package to
provide support to those affected by the flooding.
The country's western districts of Dadeldhura and Achham have
been most affected by the rains and there are reports that over 500
people have been marooned in Kailali's Dhanasinghapur and
Narayanpur areas, due to the swollen Karnali river.
Last week, severe flooding hit Vietnam as a result of typhoon
Ketsana, which is one of the worst storms to affect the region in
recent times.
