ICRC brings clean water to Azerbaijan's Terter district
4 November 2009
The
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has provided
clean drinking water to displaced civilians in Azerbaijan, the
charity reports.
Working in the Terter district of the country in conjunction
with local communities, the aid organisation has successfully
brought clean water to some 100 internally displaced people through
a new water tank and tap system.
The charity has also recently upgraded water supplies in
Ayridara, Shukurbayli, Yukhari Giyamadinli and Mirzanaghilar.
Speaking of the organisation's work in the village of Hasangaya,
ICRC water engineer Bakir Guliyev said: "The main water source used
to be the river Tartar, where the quality of water is very poor -
so much so that it was a threat to public health.
"The borehole, water tank and tap stands we provided have
improved the quality of life in Hasangaya."
On top of this, the ICRC has also supplied materials for the
restoration of the village schoolhouse, particularly its roof and
windows.
The charity has worked to bring clean water sources to
Azerbaijan since 2008 and has so far secured taps and water tanks
for 4,000 residents of war-affected regions.
It employs 91 staff in the country.
