India flooding death toll rises
6 October 2009
Rain in southern India is continuing to fall, adding fuel
to the flooding that has already claimed over 200 lives in the
region.
Karnataka has been worst affected by the flooding, which has
caused the destruction of huge swathes of farmland and although the
rainfall is now beginning to ease in the state, other areas are
continuing to see huge deluges.
Over 170 people have already been killed in Karnataka state
alone, with over 350 villages across southern India still marooned
by the rising flood waters.
There are also warnings that the impact of the floods could be
long-term, with concerns that the region's sugar output could be
severely affected.
That will mean the results of the floods will be felt for a long
time after aid agencies have helped people out of the area, with a
massive economic hit likely to be felt by the region as its crops
have been washed away.
Meanwhile, aid agencies are continuing to work in Indonesia to
help find people trapped by rubble following the recent earthquake
in the region.
