Football star promotes HIV awareness
15 October 2009
Manchester United
football star Ryan Giggs has recently completed a trip to Sierra
Leone to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS.
The trip, which was undertaken as part of the player's role as
an ambassador for UNICEF, was designed to raise awareness
of HIV and AIDS and what can be done to prevent the spread of the
virus.
High-profile footballers such as Giggs are widely recognised in
the country and can act as important role models to help promote
AIDS education among young people who may not take notice of other
professionals.
Speaking to ITV's News at Ten, Giggs said: "Maybe some of the
people who I've come across who don't believe in HIV or don't want
to listen to their teachers – maybe they'll listen to me", the
Mirror reports.
The footballer and other Manchester United players currently
feature in an advertising campaign being run in Sierra Leone to
deliver a HIV and AIDS prevention message.
