Shearer becomes patron of cancer charity
16 October 2009
Football star Alan
Shearer has taken up a role as patron of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation set up
by English footballing legend.
Sir Bobby lost his life to the disease in July this year, but
after leaving football dedicated much of his time to the fight
against cancer.
Speaking of his appointment, Shearer said: "Sadly nobody goes
through their lives unaffected by cancer and I'm proud that there
are experts working towards a cure for the disease here in the
north-east."
He added that Sir Bobby had been "incredibly proud" of the work
the foundation had done and that he was pleased to be able to help
carry on this fight.
The foundation was launched in March 2008 and has since its
inception funded equipment for cancer care in Newcastle.
It has also funded a specialist research nurse and doctor at the
Northern Centre for Cancer Care. So far, the foundation has raised
around £2 million.
