Vehicle donation website launched

20 November 2009

Smart carA new website geared towards encouraging more Brits to donate unwanted vehicles to charity is being launched.

Giveacar.com is a not-for-profit scheme that offers a pick-up service for any car, allowing its owner to donate the proceeds of its sale or scrappage to a charitable cause without personal cost.

The site can make donations to any charity registered in the UK and is based in London.

Giveacar founder Tom Chance, 22, commented: "In the UK, hardly anyone has heard of car donation. There are too many unused or underused cars on the road. We aim to put the value of these cars to good use."

Mr Chance added that the venture could represent "a new, untapped" source of income for many charities.

Volunteers working for Giveacar bear the cost of picking up a vehicle, meaning that the only costs that have to be taken from the donations themselves are auction house fees.

UK taxpayers can also give Giftaid if the organisation they are donating to is signed on to the scheme.
