Sarah Brown meets seven-year-old Unicef fundraiser
28 January 2010
The prime minister's
wife has met a seven-year-old who has raised thousands of pounds
for Unicef.
Charlie Simpson generated over £200,000 for the charity's Haiti
earthquake children's appeal through a sponsored bike ride after
his plight attracted national media coverage.
Sarah Brown greeted Charlie at Number 10, praising him for his
fundraising work and giving his family a tour of the building.
Mrs Brown commented: "Charlie's dedication in raising money for
the victims of the Haiti earthquake is truly inspirational and a
shining example of the kind of friendship, goodness and compassion
so often shown by British people."
Charlie thanked the public for donating to Unicef, most of whom
did so via his JustGiving online fundraising page.
According to Unicef, a donation of £25 can pay for a
ready-to-use therapeutic food package that could feed a child in
Haiti for a month.
The organisation is also working with the country's ministry of
health to deliver vital immunisation against tetanus, measles and
diphtheria for some 600,000 children.
Unicef provides aid to children in more than 150
countries.
