SPOTLIGHT ON STUART SWEENEY

23 February 2018

Stuart Sweeney has recently joined CAF Venturesome as a senior investment manager, tasked with originating new social impact loans and bonds, across the UK charities sector. He also looks after a portfolio of existing assets, in the CAF Venturesome investment portfolio, which deliver social impact.

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BACKGROUND

I read Philosophy Politics & Economics (PPE) at Oxford then spent 23 years in London and New York working for Kleinwort Benson, Paribas Capital Markets and UBS-UBS Warburg. I worked on fixed income deals across Europe and America, covering financing and derivatives. In addition to business I  have always loved research and this prompted me to return to university at LSE and Oxford to study at post-graduate and doctoral  level. My economic history doctoral dissertation was published in 2011 and I have a second book being published in 2019. I have taught widely at Oxford and Open Universities in history, politics and economics. I have worked in social impact investing over the past two years which made a move into CAF Venturesome a welcome opportunity for me.  I am a widower who brings up two teenage children in my spare time.

WHAT TYPES OF CAUSES ARE YOU MOST ATTRACTED TO?

I have spent a great deal of time in NHS hospitals over the past few years, and my son is applying to read medicine at university. Health and the NHS are passionate concerns for me. Equally, having taught at university, further education college and secondary school level, and worked on school projects, I am committed to education opportunities in the broadest sense. Widening participation in education is a particular interest. Watching my son work to develop coping strategies around dyslexia has informed my understanding of the benefits of special needs help for young people.
