THE IMPACT OF CAF PARTNER IDIS, ON CIVIL SOCIETY IN BRAZIL'S GROWING ECONOMY

IDIS has promoted strategic giving for the last 17 years in Brazil by supporting around 200 philanthropists and foundations to be more strategic, give to sustainable development causes and engaging in discourse with government officials.

INSTITUTE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL INVESTMENT

The CAF Global Alliance representative organisation in Brazil is IDIS (the Institute for the Development of Social Investment).  IDIS was formed in 1999 to promote strategic philanthropy at a time when it was not a common practice, aiming to support donors to be more effective in their social investment. By providing expertise and advice by holding events, publications and advisory services, and providing validation services, they have played a key role in improving the effectiveness of and increasing trust in civil society organisations in Brazil.

Through offering advice in areas such as fundraising, managerial practices and online capacity, IDIS has always been at the forefront in driving the continuous development of practices and standards in Brazilian philanthropy. As well as providing training, IDIS has become a hub for philanthropists by providing  for peer learning. Through these means, IDIS has had a crucial role in the success of many of Brazil’s leading figures and transformational leaders within civil society.

IDIS evaluated the 'Child Speaks' project that worked to build the confidence and skills of children in deprived areas of São Paulo.

CREATING THE BUILDING BLOCKS FOR A BETTER WORLD

IDIS has always and continues to be a pioneering infrastructure organisation. It is responsible for creating the first robust piece of research on giving in Brazil and launching the first campaign to promote a culture of giving on the back of these findings. Through the Brazilian Philanthropy Forum IDIS provides advice, evaluation and capacity building programmes, making philanthropy in Brazil more strategic and impact-driven and motivating greater generosity.

Recently, IDIS has played a key role in creating a positive operating environment for civil society by building relationships with Government, successfully campaigning for legislation for the creation of philanthropic endowments and early childhood care in the Amazonas State.

IDIS also provided Brazil’s first Social Return on Investment Evaluation (SROI) exercise which continues to improve effectiveness of civil society organisations. For example their first SROI evaluation revealed the huge impact of a charity called The Lucia and Pelerson Penido Foundation (FLUPP), finding that for every R$1 of investment, R$4.08 of social value was being created. It is hoped that such data-based evidence of the good being achieved could go some way to addressing a lack of trust in the sector revealed by IDIS’s research.
