CAMPAIGNS AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS

We work to build a stronger charitable sector by running campaigns, influencing government and encouraging people to give to good causes.

GIVE IT BACK, GEORGE

In 2012 we led the award-winning campaign to persuade the Government to drop the proposal made in the 2012 Budget to cap tax relief on major charitable donations.

Working together with NCVO, we spearheaded the sector-wide campaign, called Give it Back George – Drop the Charity Tax, which led to ministers dropping the proposal at the end of May 2012.

Had the proposals gone ahead, the UK's charities would have lost an estimated £500m per year.

VOLUNTEER SECTOR CAMPAIGN OF THE YEAR

Our agenda-setting campaign work, along with that of NCVO, was marked several months later, in November 2012, when the two organisations won the prestigious Public Affairs News ‘Voluntary Sector Campaign of the Year’ award.

The judging panel said: “The campaign to persuade the Government to drop its planned cap on tax relief for charitable donations has been one of the biggest co-ordinated campaigns across the voluntary sector in years.

“George Osborne's surprise announcement in this year's [2012] Budget to cap unlimited tax reliefs – including on donations to charity had an estimated potential cost of £500m a year.

"The campaign placed the charity tax issue as a key public policy issue and delivered a complete reversal of the planned cap. It used techniques of social and traditional media, research and lobbying in an innovative way to provoke unprecedented public debate about the benefits of philanthropy across many sectors of society."

A spokesperson said: “It's excellent that CAF and NCVO have been recognised for their work leading the voluntary sector’s campaign against the proposed charity tax.

“By working together, the two organisations were able to lead the charity sector and persuade the Government to drop the proposed charity tax, which would have cost charities hundreds of millions of pounds a year.

“It’s a great honour that experts from across the world of public affairs have recognised the effectiveness of our work in helping to lead this critically important campaign.”
