what we know about charity

From research into UK giving to giving across the world, CAF has been providing independent insight into why people give and how much they give, for over forty years.  Giving is our passion, and we are committed to advocating for charity by engaging with policy makers in the UK and globally to create real, positive change for civil society.

Understanding UK generosity

Key findings from CAF's UK Giving 2019:

  • The proportion of people giving money to charity either by donating or via sponsorship has seen a steady decline between 2016 and 2018.
  • Trust in charities has decreased significantly since 2016.
  • Fewer people report that they are giving money, those who do give are giving higher amounts.
  • Overall, the total amount given to charity in 2018 remains largely the same as 2017 at £10.1 billion.
  • The number of people taking part in charitable activities has decreased.
  • In 2018 children/young people and animal welfare are join most popular causes.

Understanding world giving

For the first time, in 2018 Indonesia tops the CAF World Giving Index. Previously from 2015 to 2017 Myanmar held the top position. In 2014 Myanmar and the USA shared first place.

The World Giving Index is compiled by researching three types of giving behaviour: donating money to charity, volunteering time, and helping a stranger.
