#GivingTuesday partners gather in Westminster

Charities, businesses and MPs gather in Westminster today (Tues) to pledge their support to the growing global #GivingTuesday movement, which asks people to make a simple commitment to a cause of their choice at the start of the festive season.

More than 100 charities and businesses involved in bringing #GivingTuesday to British shores will meet MPs across the political spectrum at the event at the House of Commons this lunchtime.

Minister for Civil Society Rob Wilson will pledge his support for the campaign, which brings together almost 500 businesses, charities and other organisations so far to celebrate and promote the work of charities across the country.

Three weeks before #GivingTuesday on December 2 dozens of large and small charities are joining major businesses to help launch this campaign in the UK for the first time to use this international day of giving to support fundraising, awareness raising and volunteering, as a contrast to the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales at the start of the festive shopping season.

Partners include: Cancer Research UK, Macmillan, RSPCA, RNIB, RBS, Facebook, Argos, Homebase, Glamour, the i paper, Rosie’s Rainbow Fund, Victim support, Breast Cancer Care, National Union of Students, BT, Blackbaud, Just Giving and many more. For a full list see click here.

#GivingTuesday asks people to give their time, money or voice to charity on December 2 – an alternative to the start of the pre-Christmas spending of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The movement is being led in the UK by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), working closely with Blackbaud, the Cabinet Office, and a wide range of charities, companies and sector bodies.

The campaign was launched in the US in 2012 by 92nd Street Y, in partnership with the United Nations Foundation and has since become a global movement, spreading to markets around the world with Canada, Mexico, Israel, Australia, Singapore and Latin America all getting on board in 2013. Last year the campaign had 10,000 partners worldwide and saw a huge spike in donations on the day.

Hannah Terrey, Head of Policy and Campaigns at the Charities Aid Foundation, said: "We are thrilled at the enthusiasm of parliamentarians, charities and businesses who plan use this global movement to support the causes they care deeply about.

“Today's event is all about sharing ideas and shouting about the work charities do to make the world a better place.

“Anything from a tweet to a fundraising drive on #Giving Tuesday can help make people think about the amazing work that charities do for millions of people.

“The start of the festive season is always exciting. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are great for deals, great for choosing presents and great for the economy. #GivingTuesday is a brilliant chance to give a little back.”

#GivingTuesday is a global movement celebrating the amazing acts of generosity people perform throughout the year. It culminates in an annual global day of giving, this year on December 2, 2014, which will be the first time it is celebrated in the UK.

#GivingTuesday was originally created in the United States in 2012 by 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation.  Last year #GivingTuesday spread to other countries, including Canada, Australia, Israel, Mexico and Latin America.
