Labour’s proposals for older people must help increase volunteering

22 April 2015

Commenting on the publication of Labour's Better Future for Older People manifesto, Chief Executive of the Charities Aid Foundation John Low said:

"We must not take for granted the important role that many older people play in society, both through work and by supporting their friends and family.

"Although many older people already do a great deal in support of charity, the reality is that many want to do more and give something back to their community. One in five older people feel they have a skill or talent they would like to use to benefit their community, but do not currently have the opportunity to do so.

"In addition, older people who volunteer for causes they care about are less likely to suffer from social problems such as loneliness or isolation.

"A new position of Independent Commissioner for Older People in England must include responsibility for helping to increase volunteering amongst older people to ensure that we are tapping into their generosity and helping to grow a strong culture of giving across all ages."
