CAF comments on the Liberal Democrat Election manifesto

18 May 2017

Commenting on the launch of the Liberal Democrat General Election manifesto, John Low, Chief Executive of the Charities Aid Foundation said:

"We welcome the Liberal Democrats commitment to spend 0.7% of GNI on aid and to re-focus Britain's role in creating a safer and prosperous world.  As the latest in a line of political parties to make this commitment, it is heartening to see politicians from all sides recognising the vital importance of our international development programme.

"The Liberal Democrat manifesto sets out their vision for a fairer, more just society, and much of what they suggest will be welcomed by the charity sector, not least their commitment to increasing social investment, but also the focus on tackling homelessness, addressing mental health inequalities and on fighting poverty.  However, it is disappointing that this manifesto has failed to set out the role that charities can play in addressing many of these social problems. Charities see these issues first-hand every day, and in many ways can provide expertise and insight that can enhance public policy.  We have encouraged all parties to consult charities ahead of this General Election and we will continue to do so throughout the campaign.  Charities have an important role to play in creating a better society for everyone, parties would be wise to listen to them."
