CAF responds to the Green Party’s election manifesto

22 May 2017

Responding to the publication of the Green Party’s General Election manifesto, CAF Chief Executive John Low said:

“The Green Party seeks to promote active citizenship amongst young people, and it is important that this extends to encouraging participation in volunteering and giving. Many young people feel extremely positively towards charities and causes, but not all are given the information they want about how they can get involved. Giving people an opportunity to engage in social action at a young age can help to instil a lifelong commitment to supporting charities.

“By proposing to increase international aid spending, the Green Party joins the cross-party consensus for retaining the UK’s commitment to those countries where need is greatest. Not only is our generous aid budget a sign of our compassion but it also reflects our international leadership, and the development charities involved in delivering on the ground do a great deal to increase our international ties.

“However, another manifesto that fails to put forward a comprehensive vision for the future of the UK’s voluntary sector adds to the feeling that charities and their contribution to the country are being neglected at this election. CAF calls on all political parties to reflect on their plans, and commit to doing more to work in tandem with charities to build a stronger society.”
