CAF leads campaign with NCVO to drop ‘charity tax’

29 March 2012

CAF’s joint campaign with NCVO, to persuade the Government to drop its plan to cap tax relief on major donations, has attracted the support of more than 1000 supporters - from both charities and individuals.

Among the backers are Cancer Research UK, Victim Support and Keep Britain Tidy.

With around £1.4bn given to charities by major donors each year, CAF and NCVO fear that the cap on tax relief – which would mean that anyone claiming tax relief of more than £50,000 will be limited to 25% of their annual income or £50,000, whichever is greater – will lead to philanthropists giving millions of pounds less to charity per annum.

CAF figures show that 45% of the total amount given to charity in 2009/10 was from 7% of all donors – and most of these are higher rate taxpayers that would be affected by the new cap.

The campaign, which was launched after the Chancellor announced the change in last week’s Budget, has led to coverage for CAF across the national media, including in the Sunday Times, Sunday Mirror, Daily Mail, Financial Times, Times, Daily Telegraph, Independent, City AM and the BBC.
