Global charity phenomenon to hit UK shores in 2014

Britain is to join the exciting global movement to create a new national day for giving this year, it was announced today.

#GivingTuesday – a global campaign encouraging people to give their time, money or voice to charity on one day – will take place on 2 December 2014.

The UK campaign will be led by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), working closely with Blackbaud, the Cabinet Office, and a wide range of charities, companies and sector bodies, building on the enormous success of the campaign in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Singapore, Israel and across Latin America.

#GivingTuesday falls directly after Black Friday and Cyber Monday and asks people to do one simple charitable act on the day as part of their run up to Christmas. The campaign aims to encourage thousands of charities, both big and small, to get involved in the day, as well as businesses and the wider public. The collective impact of their donations, voices, volunteer hours, and resources will help increase and enhance giving around the world in places and ways where it is needed most in the festive season. Coming in the run up to Christmas, #GivingTuesday encourages people to talk with their families, friends, neighbours, and colleagues about the importance of giving and to find creative new ways to raise funds and help out in their communities.

The campaign was launched in the US in 2012 by 92nd Street Y, in partnership with the United Nations Foundation and has since become a global movement, with Canada, Mexico, Israel, Australia, Singapore and Latin America all getting on board in 2013. Last year the campaign had 10,000 partners worldwide, with support from the White House, Kevin Bacon and Heidi Klum, among others, and saw a huge spike in donations on the day.

This year, the UK will join the movement and Cancer Research UK, Stewardship, Hope for Children and several other organisations are already a part of it.

“But we need help – the help of charities, of businesses and of people everywhere to embrace the day, share our enthusiasm and get into the #GivingTuesday spirit.”

Minister for Civil Society Nick Hurd said: “#GivingTuesday has seen monumental success in the US, Canada and Australia and I am delighted to give my support to its UK launch.

“We have always been a nation of givers and this is an opportunity for us to demonstrate our generosity on a global scale.”
