Consumer campaigner Martin Lewis launches search for champion giver ahead of Christmas shopping binge

15 October 2015

Martin LewisMartin Lewis, the founder of, is today launching a search for someone who will inspire us to be more generous ahead of the Christmas shopping frenzy.

He is leading a campaign alongside the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) to find a bighearted charity supporter or community hero who gives their time, money or voice to good causes to become the Champion for #GivingTuesday, the global day of giving on Tuesday December 1.

#GivingTuesday provides an antidote immediately after the consumer frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday at the start of the festive season, by asking people to do something for a good cause - give some time, some money or raise awareness of a cause close to their heart.

Nearly 1,000 charities, businesses, local authorities, and cities across the UK have already joined the #GivingTuesday campaign, which came to Britain for the first time last year.

Martin Lewis will sit on a judging panel to choose a #GivingTuesday Champion to highlight the fantastic work millions of people do for good causes across the country. The winner will be given support to share their story with thousands of #GivingTuesday partners and receive £250 to donate to the charity of their choice.

Other panellists will be John Low, Chief Executive of CAF, Luke Cameron, charity adviser and head of the Nicest Job In Britain, Leon Ward, youth leader, young trustee and campaigner, and Carolyn Mayling, founder of Rosie’s Rainbow Fund.

The winner will be announced on Tuesday 10 November.

Martin Lewis said: “Christmas time for many has become a session of tit for tat giving. The problem with that is most people end up with unwanted tat.

“So I’m fully behind changing the tone, Christmas isn’t a retail festival.  So to follow on from Black Friday with the much more powerful idea of #GivingTuesday is perfect.

“Let’s celebrate working through charities and giving time to benefit others in a way we know truly works.

“Therefore I’m delighted to be launching the search for #GivingTuesday’s Champion – it's time to shout out about those who give of themselves – I can’t wait to read the entries.”

John Low, Chief Executive of CAF, said: “#GivingTuesday is all about bringing together thousands of small acts of kindness for good causes.

“After two days that are good for deals and good for shopping, #GivingTuesday encourages people to do good for causes they care about.

“#GivingTuesday is all about people doing something for a good cause so our search for a #GivingTuesday Champion aims to recognise those who have the power to inspire us all.”

#GivingTuesday launched in the UK last year when hundreds of charities, businesses and communities came together to celebrate generosity. Donations through Visa were up by 10 per cent compared to the previous year and #GivingTuesday trended for over 11 hours in the UK, with 2,500 tweets per hour.

Entries can made on the #GivingTuesday website and must be made by Thursday 29 October.
