Black Friday is upon us, but what will you give this #givingtuesday?

24 November 2017

More than 3 in 5 people (61%) who have previously shopped in Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales are getting ready to bag a bargain once again, according to an online poll for the Charities Aid Foundation.

The polling was carried out ahead of #givingtuesday, on November 28, which is led in the UK by CAF. The event  encourages people to give some time, money or their voice to a good cause on the Tuesday immediately following Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The research, carried out for CAF by YouGov, found that 88% of GB adults had heard of Black Friday and 43% had heard of Cyber Monday. Of the adults who had heard of both sales, just over a third (34%) had shopped in them and, of those, a total of 61% said they were likely to do so again.

CAF also found that more than a quarter of people (27%) who shopped in previous sales don’t plan on doing so this year, Of these 27%:

  • 29% said they did not like the commercialisation of it
  • Almost 1 in 3 (30%) said the Black Friday sales brought out the worst in people
  • Almost a quarter (24%) said they could not afford to shop in the pre-Christmas sales.

Ahead of #givingtuesday, a fifth of people said they were likely to make a donation to charity as part of the global day of giving, with a further 4% saying they were very likely to do so. CAF also found that 57% of GB adults gave to charity in the last month.

Like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #givingtuesday has now become a regular fixture in the festive calendar. This will be the fourth year it has been held in the UK, with more than 1,800 UK charities and businesses signed up to take part.

Ben Russell, Director of Communications at CAF, said:

“The end of November typically marks the start of the Christmas shopping period, and #givingtuesday is a great opportunity to go beyond buying gifts and do good stuff for others.

“Taking part in #givingtuesday doesn’t necessarily have to involve donating money – it can be something as simple as talking about a good cause to a friend or colleague or giving up your time. With less than a week to go, there’s still time to think of what you can give this #givingtuesday.”
