CAF urges new London Mayor to strengthen city’s position as the ‘world’s philanthropy capital’

Monday 9 May 2016

Responding to the London Mayoral Election result, John Low, Chief Executive of the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), said:

"CAF would like to extend a warm welcome to Sadiq Khan as he takes on his role as Mayor of London.

“London is a global hub for philanthropy, a world leader in volunteering and a city where charities can have their voices heard in the corridors of power. We call on London’s new Mayor to safeguard and build on these precious pillars of our civil society.

“By continuing the legacy of volunteerism borne out of London 2012, this year London holds the title of European volunteering capital. The Mayor will do well to prioritise volunteering as a way people can shape communities and inspire others to do the same.

“The Mayor must continue to support the proud record of London’s world leading businesses and entrepreneurs in their generous philanthropy and help London strengthen its position as the world’s philanthropy capital.

“Many of the major UK charities have their headquarters in London. The knowledge and expertise of these charities is a rich source of ideas in the formulation and shaping of policy and delivery of services. We would urge the new Mayor to help charities play their role in speaking on behalf of the millions of people they support across the capital to make our city a better place.”
