The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) has today welcomed the joint
announcement from the three main political party leaders that they
will each give 10 per cent of their estates to charity.
CAF Chief Executive John Low said: “CAF warmly welcomes the
announcement by each of the three party leaders that they will
leave 10% of their estates to charity.
“This is an excellent gesture, and one that will doubtless be
warmly received by the public and charities alike - especially in
the current economic climate, where demand on many charities is
growing while overall funding for many charities is falling.
“We know from the success of the Gates-Buffett Giving Pledge in
the US that where prominent people in society pledge to give a
substantial amount of their wealth to charity, many will
follow.”
He added: “It should be remembered of course that giving through
a will is not the only way that people can support their favourite
charitable cause. There are few better feelings in life than giving
to charity - all the more reason then to do so when you are alive!
People can also set up a direct debit or simply remember to tick
the Gift Aid box. Either way, it is now more important than ever
that those who can afford to give do so.”
