Fourth #givingtuesday gathering pace online

28 November 2017

#Givingtuesday has appeared in people’s Twitter timelines 383.3 million times (impressions) in the UK so far on Giving Tuesday 2017, as thousands of people, charities and businesses across the UK  support good causes.

The global day of giving, now in its fourth year in the UK, has been the top trending item on Twitter since 8.30am. By 2.30pm, Giving Tuesday had been mentioned across all online sources worldwide more than 181,000 times.

The campaign is led in the UK by the Charities Aid Foundation. More than 2,000 UK charities and businesses are backing the campaign this year – up from 1,600 last year.  Organisations are encouraging staff, customers and the public to ‘do good stuff’, either by donating money, volunteering their time or lending their voice to a good cause today.

Highlights of the day so far have included:

  • Civil Society Minister Tracey Crouch MP promoted the day with a video about the great work that charities do across the UK
  • MPs including Victoria Prentis, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Gillian Keegan and Simon Hoare joined a choir of local school children on College Green for the charity Singing for Syrians
  • The BT tower was lit up to promote #givingtuesday
  • PayPal launched its Turkey Dash Christmas campaign, which will encourage donations to eight major UK charities. A CGI turkey representing each charity will compete in a race, broadcast on Channel 4 on December 15th. Online donations from the charities’ supporters will help each turkey ‘train’ for the race
  • Morrisons, House of Fraser and The Co-Op were running in-store promotions.

High-profile figures supporting #givingtuesday on social media today so far have included Bill and Melinda Gates, actor and presenter Lisa Riley, football pundit Robbie Savage, comedian Ricky Gervais and consumer journalist Martin Lewis.

Ben Russell, director of Communications at Charities Aid Foundation, said: “It’s been fantastic seeing people around the UK and indeed around the world supporting good causes this #givingtuesday.

“Whether it’s donating money, volunteering time, talking about a favourite charity or even simply helping a friend or neighbour, there’s a huge appetite to do good stuff for others.”
