Sunday Times Giving List to reveal record donations – CAF response

2 May 2017

Britain’s wealthiest philanthropists have donated a record amount to good causes, according to this year’s Sunday Times Giving List.

The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) partners the Sunday Times in producing the annual giving list, which is due to be published in full as part of the Sunday Times Rich List on Sunday (7 May).

It will show that philanthropists on the Rich List have this year donated a record £3.2 billion – 20% up on last year.

CAF’s Head of Private Clients Joanna Walker said:

“This year’s Giving List echoes our experience at CAF over many years. Major donors are making a huge contribution to charities and achieving amazing things. Their importance cannot be overstated.

“We know that people in the UK are among the most generous in the world when it comes to charitable giving, and this is true of people from all walks of life.

“The huge contribution of Britain’s philanthropists makes it possible for charities to do vital work which has a lasting impact improving lives. So it is fantastic to see that those with the greatest means are becoming ever-more generous in their support for good causes.”

CAF is one of Europe’s largest charitable foundations. It works with 250,000 people helping them to give around £500 million per year to more than 50,000 charities worldwide. The amount donated by major donors through CAF – people who have at least £10,000 to donate through a CAF Charitable Trust – has doubled in 10 years. £164 million was donated to charities by major donors in 2015/16.
