Morrisons have become the first supermarket to back #GivingTuesday

21 September 2015

Morrisons have become the first supermarket to back #GivingTuesday - joining hundreds of UK charities and business partners who have pledged their support for the campaign.

#GivingTuesday is the international day for giving which follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday – two of the biggest shopping days in the UK last year.

The global campaign, led in the UK by the Charities Aid Foundation, provides an opportunity for businesses, charities and others to come together to do something good in support of a charitable cause.

Morrisons is set to unveil a bundle of great initiatives for the day which will be rolled out  nationwide in support of their national charity partner Sue Ryder.  These include encouraging colleagues from all stores and sites to “Dress Festive” in return for a donation as well as a national bag pack coordinated by the in-store Community Champions.

The supermarket runs its own ‘Raise a Smile’ partnership to support charitable efforts and has been working with health and social care charity Sue Ryder since February 2014, raising over £3m since then.

David Scott, Head of Corporate Affairs at Morrisons said: “We are delighted to be leading the sector in showing support for #GivingTuesday.

“It provides a fantastic opportunity to highlight the work Sue Ryder does but also offers a chance for our staff and customers to come together to celebrate giving for a day.

“We are excited about being part of it.”

Last year was the first time #GivingTuesday came to the UK, and this year promises to be bigger and better.

Online fundraising platform Just Giving found donations were up 46% compared to the previous year and Visa Europe said donations were up 10% compared to the previous year which equated to more than £2,500 donated every minute.

The hashtag trended for 11 hours on Twitter and was mentioned 29,000 times throughout the day.

This year #GivingTuesday falls on December 1.

The campaign first launched in the US in 2012, and has taken off in 13countries, including Canada, Australia, Brazil and Singapore.

CAF’s #GivingTuesday campaign leader Kim Roberts said: “We are nearing 1,000 #GivingTuesday partners, which is brilliant, especially considering it was launched for the first time in the UK last year.

“It is a truly global initiative and it’s a fantastic opportunity for all parts of society and communities to come together and show their support for good causes.
Morrisons  is a hugely welcome addition to the campaign.  The work that they do throughout the year to support charities both nationally and locally is really inspiring and we are excited that they are showing their generosity and getting staff and customers involved on #GivingTuesday.”

About #GivingTuesday

#GivingTuesday is a global movement celebrating the amazing acts of generosity people perform throughout the year. It culminates in an annual global day of giving, this year on December 1, 2015 – the second time it is celebrated in the UK.

Last year the campaign was backed by Prime Minister David Cameron, celebrities and sports stars including Rita Ora, Helen Mirren, Lily Cole, Tom Daley and Dame Kelly Holmes.

#GivingTuesday was originally created in the United States in 2012 by 92nd Street Y, a nonprofit cultural and community centre in new York and the United Nations Foundation. It has since spread to 13 other countries, including Canada, Australia, Israel, Mexico and Latin America. Brazil, New Zealand and the UK.

The movement is built on the collective power of partners – charities, businesses and individuals – to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in giving.

#GivingTuesday encourages people to take action in their local communities and give back to the charities and causes they care about.

#GivingTuesday has now engaged more than 30,000 organisations globally – from tiny community groups to huge multi-national corporations like Google and Microsoft.

Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) is a leading international charity registered in the UK, with ten offices covering six continents. The charity’s mission is to motivate society to give ever more effectively and help transform lives and communities around the world.
