One week to go until #givingtuesday – 28 November

21 November 2017

There’s still time to join more than 1,900 individuals, businesses and charities all across the country in doing good stuff on the global day of giving.

#givingtuesday, which takes place on November 28 this year, is a global day of action aimed at getting people thinking about others during Christmas. It is coordinated by the Charities Aid Foundation in the UK, and takes place in more than 70 countries worldwide.

An antidote to the Christmas sales, it takes place on the first Tuesday after Black Friday and encourages people to do good stuff for others. That could be donating money to charity, volunteering in your community, or something as simple as offering to help a friend or neighbour.

On the day you can choose to support any charity you want in any way you want. You can choose one of CAF’s partners to support, or you can pick a totally different organisation.

Some of the good things planned by CAF’s #givingtuesday partners include:

  • RBS will match staff payroll giving donations, are e-mailing all My Reward customers, promoting messages via social media and ATMs, and engaging with charity partners to celebrate the work that RBS does
  • Thomson Reuters will encourage people to sign up to payroll giving and a volunteering scheme
  • Facebook are going to match donations on its platform up to £200k for #givingtuesday
  • BT will light up its tower to promote #givingtuesday
  • Mastercard is encouraging its staff and cardholders to get involved. Employees can make a donation to charity that Mastercard will match, and when Mastercard holders make a donation of £5 to The World Food Programme, which can feed a whole class of children, it will be doubled.
  • Morrisons and House of Fraser will be running in-store promotions
  • Toy store The Entertainer will be playing a promotional video, putting posters in store windows and running an internal campaign on payroll giving
  • Radley has teamed up with Dogs Trust to launch a stylish and highly functional dog walking backpack and matching coin purses, which will launch on #givingtuesday. 15% of each sale will go directly to Dogs Trust
  • Camelot - lottery winners will be building 'gingerbread play houses' for Zoe's Place Children's Hospice in Middlesbrough
  • PayPal will launch its Turkey Dash Christmas campaign, which will encourage donations to eight major UK charities. A CGI turkey representing each charity will compete in a race, broadcast on Channel 4 on December 15th. Online donations from the charities’ supporters will help each turkey ‘train’ for the race
  • Sainsbury’s will promote their GAYE scheme

Ben Russell, Director of Communications at Charities Aid Foundation, said:

“With just one week to go, it is heartening to see how many businesses, charities and individuals have made plans to get involved with #givingtuesday.”
