CAF Coronavirus Emergency Fund grants £1 million

28 April 2020

The Charities Aid Foundation’s Coronavirus Emergency Fund has granted more than £1 million to 256 charities across the UK.

The fund was set up late last month and an initial £5 million was made available by CAF in order to distribute rapid response grants of up to £10,000 to help small charities, non-profits and social enterprises that are struggling amid the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

Applications were paused on 5 April after more than 5,000 applications were received in just one week, requesting a combined total of over £40 million.

monica-brown-270pxMonica Brown, CAF’s Head of Charity Advisory and Programmes, said:

“We have been humbled by the charities out there that are doing everything they can to continue to operate at such a tough time. We are very proud to be able to offer some help to charities working so hard on behalf of people, causes and communities across the UK.

“I am pleased to see that we have been able to get more than £1 million in help to charities in a matter of weeks and it is our plan to grow this fund so that we will be in a position to help more small organisations to continue to deliver vital services in the weeks and months ahead.”

Help small charitable organisations

The CAF Coronavirus Emergency Fund is a way for people and businesses to securely get help to small charitable organisations to cover core costs, be they staffing, volunteer costs such as paying for petrol for deliveries to those self-isolating or equipment such as SIM cards for volunteers who are keeping in touch with vulnerable people over the phone.

In the UK, the coronavirus outbreak comes at a crucial time in the fundraising calendar and charities are being forced to cancel events, staff and volunteers are unable to work due to social distancing or the need to self-isolate and other services are affected by restrictions aimed at curbing the crisis.

The fundraising numbers from this time last year signal how much is at stake for UK charities. From March to May last year (2019) YouGov estimates that £435 million was donated to charities through sponsorship.  The London Marathon alone (postponed from April until October owing to Covid-19) raised £66.4m for charity – setting a world record for an annual single day charity fundraising event for the 13th year in a row.

CAF has also partnered with the 2.6 Challenge to help charities recover some of the lost income from sponsored events.
