CARE CHARITY ACCLAIMED FOR ITS ENTERPRISING APPROACH

Award winning charity, Kenward Trust, is encouraged by progress of new trading venture, set up with the help of a CAF Bank loan.

Accepting awards must have seemed a distant dream for care charity, Kenward Trust, when the loss of grant funding threatened its substance dependence rehabilitation projects.

As David Philpott, Chief Executive at Kenward Trust, explains, "Two years ago the Kenward Trust faced an uncertain future following the withdrawal of most funding for residential drug and alcohol services. Our charity had asked Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) to prepare an independent report on options going forward. Based on the recommendations of that report, we engaged with CAF Bank to discuss ways of funding a business investment and development strategy”.

NEW TRADING ACTIVITIES

A £500,000 loan from CAF Bank has helped Kenward Trust develop new trading activities, including the opening of a boutique charity shop, a café with trained baristas and an exquisite conference centre.

The charity’s social enterprise provides its clients with training and employment, selling products they have made in woodcraft, pottery and horticultural classes. Known as ‘social bridging’, gradually exposing residents to meaningful work puts them in a much stronger position to maintain their recovery on leaving the facility. As well as helping to build their confidence and skills, the new venture is growing the charity's support base and sources of income.

AWARD ACCOLADE

David Philpott is thrilled with the early outcomes of the strategy, "One of our strategic aims in seeking support from CAF Bank was the development of our social enterprise. The acquisition of our first retail shop, café and the development of our conference facilities are exciting initiatives and are progressing well.

“It’s a testament to the open mindedness and altruistic ethos of CAF Bank that they agreed to fund this new pathway, so that now we have been recognised as Kent Charity of the Year 2017."
