After converting a property into a guest house, a charity cleverly adapted the project to support essential workers.

St Vincent’s and St George’s Association purchased the Grade two listed building, to restore the property to its former glory as a guest house and place of education.

Helped by a £350,000 loan from CAF Bank, the care charity completed the refurbishment and launched this social enterprise project in early 2020.

Soon after the Portland Guesthouse opened its doors, the COVID-19 outbreak disrupted the original plans. The project aims to deliver onsite training for vulnerable adults, helping them to gain a qualification and begin a career in the hospitality sector. Providing B&B accommodation to visitors to Cheltenham will generate income that helps fund the charity’s work.

Although the project’s normal activities have had to be suspended during the pandemic, the charity has found another way to deliver its vision. The guest house offered free overnight accommodation for NHS staff and key workers, subsidised by donations, enabling these frontline heroes to safely isolate from their families.
