For 75 years, a charitable programme has conserved and adapted historic properties, to meet the ever-changing demands of a vibrant city.

York Conservation Trust is dedicated to acquiring and restoring heritage buildings within the city, and then putting them back to good use. Among its portfolio of over 85 properties are some of York’s most important landmarks.

Jonathan Bryant, Secretary and CEO of York Conservation Trust, explains the Trust's charitable purpose:

With loan finance support from CAF Bank, the charity purchases important buildings in disrepair, restoring and then leasing them to businesses and as places to live. Existing commercial tenants include an art gallery and café, theatre, independent restaurants, a church, the registrar office, bridalwear designer, dentist, acupuncturist, craft guild and a skateboard shop.

Hear the steps that this charity has taken to remain resilient during the Covid-19 pandemic:

Through the Trust’s stewardship, the area’s architectural fabric is being preserved and changes of building use are carefully and sustainably managed; for example, retrofitting energy-efficient heating systems into timber-framed structures.

Honed over decades, it’s a successful business model that aims to ensure York remains an attractive place to work, live and visit for generations to come.

The Trust's CEO, Jonathan Bryant, offers a top tip for charities and social purpose organisations planning a property purchase or development to grow their impact:
