CHARITY SECRET WEAPONS PART 5 - WHAT'S IN YOUR ANNUAL REPORT SHOP WINDOW?

Our donor clients often ask us to help them research charities which could be a good fit for the kind of work and impact they want to support. For example, they might have a particular interest in funding projects for the elderly on the Wirral, or be determined to find the most effective way to tackle youth unemployment in London.

So how do donors and advisors - who may not be immediately familiar with the work of your charity - find you, understand what you’re about and get a feel for how your work shines? The most obvious place is your website, but for the more discerning donor this will be closely followed by a good read of your Annual Report, which satisfies the need for more detailed 'under the bonnet' information.

The Annual Report is all too often seen as just a reporting tool, rather than a window into your organisation. Charities which use their Annual Report as an opportunity to get the reader excited about the difference they’ve made are ahead of the game.

I've seen quite a few charities call this their ‘Impact Report’ which - if they can back it up - is a strong statement of intent. Another charity recently told me that last year they designed their Annual Report as a school report - even identifying a few 'could do better' areas, giving them the opportunity to invite supporters to help them turn those C-'s into A*'s.

MAKE YOUR ANNUAL REPORT MORE APPEALING

1. Don’t just report your activity, showcase your impact
2. Bring your report to life with a mix of content - hard statistics, facts and figures, quotes, case studies and photos
3. Give your readers a taste of what’s to come in the next year
4. Be creative with your design, make it enjoyable for your readers

So make sure your next Annual Report turns heads; your next major donor might just be reading it.
