CAF Connects Summer 2015

Date for your diaries - Tuesday 1 December 2015 #GivingTuesday

What is #GivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday began in the United States in 2012, and was created by community organisation, 92nd Street Y in partnership with the UN Foundation. It follows the two ‘shopping holidays’ of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and encourages people and organisations to give something back on #GivingTuesday. This can be giving time, money, skills or simply showing the world which causes you support and why.

#GivingTuesday has now become a global movement – with more and more countries joining in every year.  In 2014, we successfully brought #GivingTuesday to the UK for the first time, working closely with core partners, Blackbaud.  Over 800 UK charities and businesses signed up to be part of this fantastic movement, including BT, Argos, RBS, NSPCC, Marie Curie, RSPCA, and Cancer Research UK.  There was also huge support from politicians, including the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition.

What did we achieve in 2014?

#GivingTuesday trended on Twitter for 11 hours on December 2 2014, with over 2,500 tweets sent per hour.  More than £2,500 was donated every minute on #GivingTuesday and JustGiving reported an increase of 46% in donations compared to the same day in 2013. #GivingTuesday also attracted the support of a host of celebrities, including Helen Mirren, David Tennant, Tom Daley and Lily Cole.

Where do you come in?

We’re very keen to build on this success in 2015. We want to make sure that as many people as possible get involved with #GivingTuesday and to make this a great start to the giving season.

As a business, #GivingTuesday can be an opportunity to shout about the fantastic work that you do in your communities or a chance to do something special with your charity partners.  It can also be a day to engage your staff in fundraising and volunteering or to try out something completely different.

If you are not already involved, we'd love to have you on board as a #GivingTuesday partner.  It’s as simple as signing up and committing to do something charitable on that day!  We’d love to talk to you and share ideas for how you might make the most of this fantastic campaign.  We have all sorts of toolkits, resources and case studies available and would love to help support and promote your plans.
