SPOTLIGHT ON ROSIE

Rosie Richardson-Aitken, Corporate Responsibility Manager, Brewin Dolphin, tells us what philanthropy means to her.

Spotlight on the City

WHY IS PHILANTHROPY IMPORTANT TO YOU?

Philanthropy is clearly an important element in the working of any society and the donation of private and corporate money, time and resources can help improve many of the challenges that society faces today.  As a society we are increasingly self-absorbed and philanthropy shows us a more civic sense of self.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GIVE?

It is my friends and colleagues and their support for causes close to their hearts that inspire me.  When people you know explain to you why they feel passionately about a cause and how these charities have had a positive impact on their lives, or those around them, it is these personal experiences that inspire me to give.

HOW DOES YOUR ORGANISATION SUPPORT YOU TO GIVE?

Brewin Dolphin offers a CAF Give As You Earn scheme which matches our employees' donations on a monthly basis. Employees are also given one day every year to volunteer for a charity of their choice and part of my role is to encourage my colleagues to get out there and get involved. There is a fundraising matching scheme and a small grants programme, so employees have plenty of opportunities to support the charities that mean a lot to them.

WHY IS GIVING IMPORTANT IN THE CITY?

City Giving Day is an important way for large financial organisations to demonstrate that they are prepared to share their success and use their resources to help solve some of the issues that exist in the communities around them. Increasingly businesses are putting more time and energy into supporting charities on many levels and not just donating funds and walking away.

IF YOU WERE GIVEN £1M TO DONATE, WHAT DIFFERENCE WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE?

I would use the money to support young people affected by homelessness and social exclusion across the UK, to get the help and training they need to get back on their feet and into lasting work. Everyone should be given the opportunity to show their potential and excel.
