MAKING A DIFFERENCE FROM THE WORKPLACE

Giving back and fostering a collective spirit is a core part of the working culture at one of the world’s largest firms, and thanks to Workplace Giving, staff at Bain & Company have helped donate over A$120,000 to some 90 charities over the last year.

The management consulting firm hopes to continue this momentum, with a goal of 80% of employees participating in the programme. The firm partners with a range of innovative organisations and in 2015 was able to grow its Workplace Giving scheme by partnering with Good2Give to enable staff to donate online to their choice of thousands of charities.

To date, Bain & Company’s Workplace Giving programme has contributed more than A$1,000,000. Speaking about its significance, David Zehner, Managing Partner at Bain & Company, said: “Workplace Giving has the potential to transform society. We have a tremendous opportunity to make a difference and I encourage other business leaders to establish a Workplace Giving programme.”

Embedding the giving culture

In 2014, Bain & Company implemented a Workplace Giving opt-out scheme for all new starters to help increase its participation rate. New team members in the firm’s workforce were included in the scheme unless they ticked a box to say they preferred not to be involved, with a default donation each month going to a selection of key charity partners.

Speaking about the initiative, Lucy d’Arville, Partner at Bain & Company, said: “A core part of our culture is giving back and our program taps into that collective spirit. By automatically including new staff in Workplace Giving, it means they can feel part of our culture from day one. All new starters receive an in-person session on workplace giving as part of their induction. People have the option to change the recipient and donation amount at any time, or to withdraw from the programme. However, only a very small portion of our new starters choose to withdraw, particularly once they understand how efficient and easy workplace giving is.”

The Impact

Increased employee participation

Bain & Company’s sustained communications saw the firm’s Workplace Giving employee participation rate move from 51% to 62% over the course of 2017.

2000 charities available

Offering staff a wide range of charities also played a role in driving participation rates up.

100% awareness and understanding

A recent staff survey demonstrated the success of the employee education efforts, with a ‘lack of awareness/understanding’ as a barrier to joining the firm’s giving program falling from 21% in 2015 to 0% in 2016.

$120,000 to 90 charities

Over the last year, Bain & Company staff donated over A$120,000 to some 90 charities through Workplace Giving. The firm hopes to continue this momentum, with a goal of 80% of employees participating in the program.
