PHILANTHROPY COMES OF AGE

10 November 2017

Vehicles for charitable giving are nothing new. The first charitable trusts were developed in the sixteenth century in the UK and now there are an estimated 12,000 grant making trusts in the UK, giving away at least £6 billion.

By contrast, the donor advised giving market has grown at a meteoric speed and continues to rise, as our new report ‘Philanthropy Comes of Age’ shows, in partnership with UK Community Foundations. Pioneered by Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in the 1970s and worth an estimated £370 million in the UK alone, the donor advised giving market makes up nearly 4% of all charitable giving in the UK – and if forecasts hold, in ten years’ time, one in ten donations in the UK will come through donor advised vehicles. We shouldn’t be surprised though – the biggest fundraising charity in the US is now Fidelity Charitable, a donor advised fund.

HOW HAS THIS PHENOMENAL GROWTH HAPPENED, AND WHY ARE DONORS TURNING TO THESE GIVING VEHICLES IN INCREASING NUMBERS?

Give, grow, gift. For 40 years, we’ve used this simple approach to help our clients enjoy their philanthropy and have the biggest impact with their charitable giving.

In a world where most of us are trying to streamline our lives rather than complicate them, donors are choosing to use providers rather than set up their own foundations. It is cost-effective, easy and enables you, as a donor, to concentrate on the most important part – giving to your favourite causes. You can involve your family and some vehicles, like the CAF Charitable Trust, allow you to give globally and support social investment or other charitable projects.

We look forward to building on this initial report, Philanthropy Comes of Age, each year as we track how the market not only grows but also matures. Just as with traditional charitable foundations, ensuring that your giving is having the greatest impact is as important as the generosity itself.
