HOW TO SPOT A CHARITABLE ORGANISATION

CAF is a not-for-profit organisation, specifically created to support other charitable organisations and help people donate money to them. If you’re looking for a cause to support, we can help - whether it’s a small charity local to you or an international aid provider. We make supporting important causes simple and impactful, providing a variety of ways to give tax-effectively, make long-term donation plans or one-off gifts.

However, there’s more to the charitable organisations we support than you might imagine. A charity is often thought of simply as an organisation that exists solely to help others, but in truth there are many different institutions and groups that also have charitable status and which need your support. We’ve outlined how you can spot a charitable organisation, as well as how you can find new and great causes you may never have considered.

WHAT IS A CHARITY?

The term ‘charity’ is a legal status for an organisation, and all charities have to meet two strict criteria to qualify. The objectives of the organisation must be entirely charitable; not a combination of charitable and non-charitable objectives, and the organisation must be created for public benefit; not for an individual or a limited group of people.

Charities that meet these conditions can be registered with The Charity Commission for England and Wales, The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland or the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) - independent bodies set up to regulate charities and their activities.

But that’s by no means the end of the story; there are many other charitable organisations and social enterprises that are not registered as charities, but use their profits to help others and need public support to keep them going.

THREE THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT CHARITIES AND CHARITABLE ORGANISATIONS

Fact 1: Our UK Giving report for 2017 found that charities and charitable organisations set up to fund medical research are the most popular with donors, closely followed by those focused on animal welfare, children or young people and hospitals and hospices.

Fact 2: Many high-profile public services are at least partly managed by charities or not-for-profit organisations, including the Ambulance Service, which is partially run by charities such as St Johns Ambulance, and our 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service, run in its entirety by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Fact 3: Charitable organisations can include schools, museums, galleries, churches and even Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs). With a registered charitable purpose, these organisations reinvest funds they generate back into the social or cultural objectives they stand for.

WHAT SORT OF CHARITABLE ORGANISATIONS CAN I GIVE TO THROUGH CAF?

There are plenty of options for giving through CAF. You can choose from almost every charity registered in the UK, as well as a huge range of other organisations carrying out vital charitable projects.

We validate every charity and charitable organisation we work with, whether or not they are registered with their regional Commission, to ensure each organisation is legitimate. This enables us to pass on tax-effective donations and to make sure each donation complies with all relevant UK laws.

Most importantly, our validation gives you peace of mind that when you donate securely to a charitable organisation, your donation will go straight to the heart of your chosen cause. We also revalidate our listed charitable organisations on a regular basis to make sure they are still operating in a way that puts your donation to good use.
