North Western Reform Synagogue

What

Extensive renovation and redevelopment programme

Why

To increase the support provided to the local community

The cause

Founded in 1933 and established on its present site since 1936, North Western Reform Synagogue, known as Alyth, is one the UK’s largest synagogue communities.

Serving the prayer and communal needs of its multigenerational Progressive Jewish membership, Alyth works to be a leading light in both the Jewish and wider local faith community.

Our support

Looking to further the support it provides to members and local communities, Alyth  committed to a major redevelopment and updating of its facilities – including an extensive redevelopment of the synagogue’s south wing and the upgrading of its outdoor facilities.

To undertake the redevelopment work Alyth’s leadership secured the financial support of both its community and CAF Bank, a specialist provider of financial solutions for charitable and voluntary organisations.

Seeking a financial partner with shared values and who understood their organisational structures and income streams, CAF Bank worked with Alyth’s leadership to deliver a bespoke £3.5 million loan facility.

“The support from CAF enabled us to achieve our vision for a building that is modern and welcoming, and able to accommodate the range of activities and programming that we offer to our members and the wider community”, says Alyth’s former Chair and lead on the building project, Noeleen Cohen.

“Taking a loan is a major commitment. Our community were able to take it on knowing that CAF Bank is an established, expert partner in this area.

“Our relationship with CAF Bank is built on trust and commitment that began on the first day we met and will continue long into the future.”

The impact

The opening of the new south wing to the synagogue and upgraded outdoor facilities marks the start of a new chapter for Alyth, with the completed renovation programme providing accessible, welcoming prayer, learning and gathering spaces.

The modern, welcoming facilities are available for use by the wider local community. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the south wing’s new light filled, multi-use communal spaces are equipped with the appropriate ventilation to ensure the safe delivery of services for the decades to come.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Alyth, learn about their vital role in the local community, and to support their redevelopment”
, says CAF Bank Senior Relationship Director, Sean Taylor. “Helping charities to achieve their goals is at the core of what we do at CAF Bank and Alyth’s new facilities will benefit the area for generations to come.”
