Common questions

  • Is there a minimum balance required to open a CAF Bank account?

You can open a CAF Bank account with as little as £1,000.

  • How long will it take to open an account?

We’ve received a large number of requests to open new accounts with us since the coronavirus outbreak.

The impact of the outbreak has changed rapidly over the last few days, and although we are working hard to open accounts, it may take us a little longer than usual to do so.

Please help us to help you - If you’re about to send us your application, please don’t send your initial deposit by cheque as we may have difficulties processing it whilst we are following our coronavirus operating plan. Instead, we’ll post out your new account details and explain how you can send an online payment to your account.

  • What can I do to help ensure the account opening process goes smoothly?

To help the account opening process to go smoothly, please:

    • Complete the forms carefully. You'll find clearly signposted guidance within the application forms to help you complete each section.
    • Use the checklists within the form to double check that you've completed the forms correctly and enclosed the documentation needed to accompany your application.
    • Please ensure that the form is signed.

If you have any queries during the application process, please contact our Customer Service team on 03000 123 456 (Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm, except English bank holidays) or by emailing

While we’re happy to correspond by email, we won’t discuss or send sensitive or confidential information electronically.

  • Why have you increased your fees?

Due to the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, we have absorbed increases in our costs for processing various transactions. We’ve also felt the effects of the Bank of England’s exceptional measures, which have reduced interest rates to an all-time low.

As a result, we’ve made the decision to make changes to our tariff of charges.
We’ve held the changes to the minimum needed to cover our costs. This will help ensure we can continue to offer the range of services that your organisation depends upon.

  • Why increase your fees now, during the pandemic?

We understand that increases in fees are never welcome, especially at a time when organisations are focused on steadying their finances.

We delayed making these changes for as long as we could. We’ve also held the changes to the minimum needed to cover our costs. This will help ensure we can continue to offer the range of services that your organisation depends upon.

How we describe our banking services

The meaning of the words and phrases we use are detailed in the CAF Bank General Terms and Conditions, Section 1, Meaning of words and phrases.

In addition, the Financial Conduct Authority has published a set of standardised terms and definitions that all banks use to describe their payment account services. A glossary of the terms and definitions we use it available to view here. These definitions apply to each term, unless we clearly explain otherwise.

We set out the cost of our banking services in the CAF Cash Account Fee Information Document, which is designed to make it easier for you to compare the cost of our services with those of other banks.
