Keeping your card safe

Keeping your card safe

Below are some of the methods criminals employ to gain access to your card, and the ways you can protect your money.

Owning a bank card facilitates easier payments for you, but can also mean someone else may have access to your money if they obtain your card. Criminals may steal the physical card, or the details on your card. Criminals may use the stolen card to make purchases, use the cardholder’s and card’s details to make purchases online or sell the card details on.

How card theft can occur

There are various ways a fraudster could obtain your card details, to steal money from you or your organisation, these include but are not limited to:

  • Someone steals your card or a device with your card stored, such as your phone
  • Card ID theft - Fraudsters steal documents containing personal details, such as card numbers or address. These can be used to make purchases online or request new cards
  • A new card is intercepted in the mail
  • ATM fraud - Cash machines are tampered with. They can be used to clone, or not return your card
  • Internal fraud - Lending your card to a colleague, who then uses the card to make unauthorised purchases or shares the card details with someone else
  • Criminals set up fake websites that look like legitimate, well known, businesses and steal your card information when you make a purchase.

Tips for keeping your money safe

1. Store your card in a secure location

and do not give it to anyone to use on your behalf

2. Keep your PIN secret

and do not write it down, or reveal it if asked, even to your bank or the police. Keep the key pad shielded when entering your PIN

3. Make sure nothing on the ATM looks suspicious

before entering your card. If the machine looks tampered with, report it to the relevant bank. Using ATMs inside a branch provides more safety than using one outside

4. Never share your card details

except when making a secure payment

5. Shred old cards and documents

containing personal information and card details

6. Regularly check your card statement

to ensure there are no fraudulent purchases

7. Check out the CAF Bank security centre

for up to date advice from our fraud experts relating to purchase scams, invoice fraud and more.
