Campaigns and Public Affairs

CAF leads a number of different campaigns and projects to increase charitable giving and improve the environment for charities.

global middle class

Groundwork for Growing Giving builds on the work of the Future World Giving project, and includes recommendations about steps national governments need to take to build a thriving civil society.

CAF is looking at how we can encourage the growth of civil society across the globe. The growth of the global middle class offers huge philanthropic potential if giving levels in countries such as the UK can be matched internationally, representing a means for sustainable domestic development.
We’re exploring an opportunity for the Department for International Development to work collaboratively with governments to develop infrastructure for a thriving civil society, particularly in countries where the UK is transitioning out of aid relationships, to leave a lasting legacy of UK aid.

It's widely recognised that many areas of the UK have suffered economically, as the traditional industries which fuelled their growth have declined. One element that has been absent from many of the political discussions on this topic is philanthropy, and the role it can play in driving local investment into urban centres.

As policy makers start to think about addressing this gap, with an increasing focus on devolution, city deals and the introduction of programmes like the "Northern Powerhouse" and the "Midlands Engine", there is undoubtedly an opportunity to start revitalising our towns and cities. And yet, one element that has been absent from many of the political discussions on this topic is philanthropy, and the role it can play in driving local investment into urban centres.

We believe the time is now to look again at philanthropy, not only as a route to financial investment, but also as a way of reconnecting people with places and spaces.
