My career with CAF: from work experience to a new job

Tell me a bit about your role at CAF

I work as a Customer Service Representative, within the CAF Give As You Earn team. I’m being trained in different areas, but my main task is processing Donor Analysis documents. I’ve also been trained in setting up employees as donors for one of our big corporate clients, which I do every Friday, and have learnt how to transfer donations to their choice of charities across the UK.

What's the most enjoyable part of your job?

I feel very comfortable in my job. The office has a lovely atmosphere and my colleagues are friendly and happy to help. This means I’ve been able to settle in quickly and feel more confident talking to people. I’ve really enjoyed my training and feel that my IT skills have improved as a result.

What help did you have during your work experience?

When I started my work experience at CAF, I needed some additional help getting to the office and settling into my new role, so my Employment Support Officer accompanied me. This helped me get used to my new environment and the people around me. We took the bus together so that she could show me which stop I needed to get off at. As I got more used to the building, and the travel, I eventually started attending work on my own.

My managers have been very flexible and let me work at a speed I’m comfortable with, which has improved my confidence.

What would you say to someone who was looking for work experience?

If you’re new to the world of work, and feel uncomfortable with change, I would definitely recommend taking part in work experience. It can help you get used to new surroundings and people at a pace that’s right for you. It also gives colleagues the time to get to know you and form a good working relationship.
