DEC Myanmar earthquake appeal

Help emergency efforts to support the thousands of people in Myanmar.

About the DEC appeal

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake has devastated huge areas of Myanmar.

Hundreds of people are still missing. Many more have no access to the safe shelter, clean water, food and medical care they need to survive.

Countless roads and buildings have been destroyed, including schools and water supplies. Network and power lines are down. People are cut off from vital services.

Myanmar was already facing a severe humanitarian crisis with a third of the population in need of humanitarian aid.

DEC charities are already on the ground in affected communities and are working hard to access remote areas. For more information on how and where DEC member charities are responding, please visit dec.org.uk.

You can also search our database for any UK charity, either using a charity name, registered number or key terms, or by logging in to an existing account to give through CAF.

Frequently asked questions about DEC appeals

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) is an umbrella organisation for 15  humanitarian aid agencies that unites UK aid efforts in times of disaster or crisis, in poorer countries around the world.

We are a cause-neutral charity whose mission is to enable donors to give more effectively to any charity or cause they care about, whether that is a DEC appeal or any other charitable appeal.

We have traditionally promoted DEC appeals, from the Asian Tsunami to the earthquake in Nepal to the humanitarian crisis in East Africa.

We believe it is important to highlight the ways in which any member of the public can give to DEC or any charity of their choice at any time.

DEC members have a long-established presence in Myanmar and member charities are already supporting affected communities. 14 of the 15 DEC member charities were already working in Myanmar directly or through local and national partners and are present in the regions most impacted by the earthquakes. They are currently assessing the situation with their local and national partners, with some already beginning to respond where needs are clear.

Local partners are a key part of any DEC response. Member charities have strong local connections with the community, religious leaders, and elders, and have negotiated access locally to ensure they can get aid to the people who need it most. These relationships help ensure aid reaches intended recipients.

DEC only launch an appeal when they know they can help, and they have three criteria to help ensure that they launch the right appeals at the right time.

We want you to get the most of every donation you make, no matter how small or large. If you are a UK taxpayer and donate through CAF, we will re-claim Gift Aid on your behalf. This will add another 25% to your donation, boosting the income that the DEC can direct towards supporting the organisations who will provide the emergency relief.

For more information on the partner charities, please visit the DEC website.
