DEC Middle East Humanitarian Appeal

The conflict across the Middle East is devastating lives, and millions have fled their homes in search of safety. Your support will help provide urgent shelter, food, water and health services to families in need.

About the DEC appeal

Millions of people across Gaza, Lebanon and the wider region are in urgent need of food, shelter and medical care. In Gaza, the scale of humanitarian need is overwhelming. People are dying of hunger and disease, as well as injuries caused by the conflict. In Lebanon, more than a million people have fled their homes since mid-September and emergency shelters are struggling to support all those in need.

Despite extraordinary challenges and risks, DEC member charities have demonstrated their ability to deliver life-saving and life-sustaining aid in Gaza, reaching a level that now warrants a national appeal. With the conflict escalating in Lebanon, causing massive displacement in an already fragile country, a DEC appeal is now more urgent than ever. This appeal is crucial to secure the necessary funds to support conflict-affected communities in Gaza, Lebanon, and the surrounding region where families have been displaced.

DEC charities are on the ground saving lives right now, and they are ready to act wherever the needs are greatest. For more information on how and where DEC member charities are responding, please visit dec.org.uk.

Frequently asked questions about DEC appeals

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) is an umbrella organisation for 15 humanitarian aid agencies that unites UK aid efforts in times of disaster or crisis, in poorer countries around the world.

We are a cause-neutral charity whose mission is to enable donors to give more effectively to any charity or cause they care about, whether that is a DEC appeal or any other charitable appeal.

We have traditionally promoted DEC appeals, from the Asian Tsunami to the earthquake in Nepal to the humanitarian crisis in East Africa.

We believe it is important to highlight the ways in which any member of the public can give to DEC or any charity of their choice at any time.

The DEC has been deeply concerned about the devastating humanitarian situation in Gaza since last October and has been constantly reviewing against its three criteria for an appeal. Initially, only 7 of our member charities were working in Gaza when the conflict began. Now, fourteen of our member charities are able to respond there.

Between October 2023 and July 2024, DEC members already spent more than £70 million pounds in Gaza, and more funds will greatly enhance their ability to upscale their response.

Members are using all available routes to get goods into Gaza, which continue to change over time. They have found ways to leverage all opportunities, including commercial trucks, aid trucks, and UN trucks.

There is also plenty of support they can provide that does not rely on external aid delivery, such as cash vouchers so people have access to local markets, and skilled staff to offer vital services such as medical care and psychological support.

Providing life-saving assistance in highly volatile and insecure environments is difficult, but by identifying risks early, leveraging local knowledge, understanding local dynamics, and coordinating with UN agencies and partners, members are implementing suitable mitigation measures. The operating environment is continually monitored, and DEC members and their local partners adapt their strategies as needed.

When DEC launch an appeal

DEC only launch an appeal when they know they can help, and they have three criteria to help ensure that they launch the right appeals at the right time.

We want you to get the most of every donation you make, no matter how small or large. If you are a UK tax payer and donate through CAF, we will re-claim Gift Aid on your behalf. This will add another 25% to your donation, boosting the income that the DEC can direct towards supporting the organisations who will provide the emergency relief.
