Why

To secure a new site, hire staff, and expand a model where lived experience shapes learning and every child can thrive.

Born from lived experience. Backed to grow.

Every CAF story starts somewhere.

Our Impact Accelerator team, through social investment and advisory support, helped Oaks Rise CIC to scale – securing a new site, hiring staff, and expanding a model where lived experience shapes learning and every child can thrive.

Their challenge

Founded in 2023 by mothers of autistic children, Oaks Rise CIC is a neurodivergent-led alternative education and learning centre based in East Sussex. It was born out of the founder’s children’s shared experience of school-based trauma and mental health challenges that had left them disengaged from mainstream education.

Oaks Rise offers a pioneering, neuro-affirming model that blends academic opportunity with a nurturing, learner-led approach. It is the first education setting in the UK where almost all staff are neurodivergent, creating a uniquely empathetic and empowering environment. However, despite strong demand and a proven concept, the organisation faced a critical challenge: its original premises – a converted bar space – were unsuitable for growth, and limited working capital constrained its ability to scale.

Our support

In December 2024, our Social Investment team committed a bespoke £80,000 blended finance package through the Venturesome Impact Fund. This included:

  • An unsecured loan of £75,000 (disbursed in two tranches tied to delivery milestones)
  • A £5,000 grant for counselling services to support the wellbeing of Oaks Rise’s teaching staff
  • In-kind advisory services from CAF’s Advisory team.

The funding enabled Oaks Rise to secure a long-term lease on a fit-for-purpose facility in Brighton and Hove, hire a teaching assistant, and expand its service offerings. Our advisory support also helped the organisation develop detailed pupil journey maps – visual tools that articulate the emotional, social, and educational outcomes children achieve – enhancing its impact narrative for parents and funders alike.
Our approach was intentionally flexible and supportive, with a repayment schedule aligned to Oaks Rise’s cash flow and a risk-mitigated structure that recognised the early-stage nature of the organisation.

The Impact

The investment has been transformative. Oaks Rise has:

  • Moved into a larger, more suitable facility
  • Increased its capacity to support more pupils
  • Strengthened its staff team and wellbeing infrastructure
  • Enhanced its ability to demonstrate impact through improved measurement tools.

Since opening, Oaks Rise has supported over 40 pupils and expects to reach over 300 children in the next five years. Its model – low-demand, learner-led, and rooted in lived experience – has proven to be a lifeline for children who previously felt excluded from education.

“CAF’s support came at a pivotal moment. They didn’t just provide funding – they understood our mission and gave us the tools to grow with integrity. Thanks to them, we’re now able to offer a safe, empowering space to even more children who need it most.”

Charity Representative, Oaks Rise CIC

“This deal really demonstrates the value of social investment when it leans in early. By backing Oaks Rise at a critical moment, we helped unlock their potential to scale and deepen their impact. It’s a great example of how flexible finance, paired with trust and strategic support, can catalyse grassroots innovation.
