what we know about charity

From research into UK giving to giving across the world, CAF has been providing independent insight into why people give and how much they give, for over forty years.  Giving is our passion, and we are committed to advocating for charity by engaging with policy makers in the UK and globally to create real, positive change for civil society.

Understanding world giving

For the first time, in 2018 Indonesia tops the CAF World Giving Index. Previously from 2015 to 2017 Myanmar held the top position. In 2014 Myanmar and the USA shared first place.

The World Giving Index is compiled by researching three types of giving behaviour: donating money to charity, volunteering time, and helping a stranger.

Understanding UK generosity

Our research into UK giving provides unique and comprehensive insights into donor behaviour.  We reveal how much is being donated to charity and who is donating. We explore the impact of key issues affecting charities, and how donors and charities are responding to significant UK events.
