About no 5

No 5 offer confidential counselling to support children and young people and those around them, through their listening service for those aged 11-25 living, working or studying in Reading.

They also run an outreach program which includes counselling sessions in local schools, and the Young Ambassador scheme through which they support and train young people to deliver talks, workshops and events directly to their peers.

The funding from the CAF Resilience Fund has had a huge impact on No 5’s stability and security as we head into the next financial year.

How the £34,326 grant from the CAF Resilience Fund helped support children with mental health conditions

Remote Counselling

Funded the referral of 136 children for 20 remote counselling sessions each.

Stability

Core operational running costs covered salaries, upgrading office broadband, rent, utilities and thorough daily cleaning of counselling rooms during Covid-19.

Planning

Allowed the charity to plan ahead for the next financial year, focussing on future fundraising knowing that costs for the coming financial year was covered.

No 5: Their story

During the pandemic, No 5 have seen a 123% increase in referrals compared to the same six month period in the previous year.  There have been 360 referrals over the course of the last six months and early indications show that there are no signs of this changing in the near future.

Using a CAF Resilience Fund grant No 5 have been able to support 136 new referrals by offering virtual counselling.  These sessions can either take place on site where young people have access to an office tablet or from their own homes.

This funding is crucial to manage the surge in demand caused by the escalation in mental health problems, so that youngsters do not have an extended wait for services to support them.

The Impact

Funding for core salaries and running costs is unfortunately hard to come by. This core funding from CAF has not only helped us to support 136 young people, but also secure our position as we head into next year.
